Over the weekend, our cubs on the varsity swim team took a trip up to Concord to compete in the 36th annual De La Salle Invitational! This was the team’s 6th year attending the meet, and there is no doubt that it has become a cherished tradition for the varsity swim team.
After a long day of racing in the preliminary meet, three of our cubs qualified for the Finals in their individual events, which took place on the following day. Kris Vallesteros ‘28—Mayfield’s ‘swimmer of the meet’—qualified for the Finals in both of her individual events, the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke. Additionally, Sophie Bilu ‘27 and Abby Longo ‘26 joined Kris in qualifying for Finals in the 200 IM.
The Medley Relay team of Maddie Herrera ‘27, Vallesteros, Bilu, and Zoe Chiu ‘26 placed 13th. Meanwhile, the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Chiu, Stella McCarthy ‘29, Athena Spiro ‘29, and Etienne Lanchantin ‘26 placed 11th, and the 400 Freestyle Relay of McCarthy, Bilu, Spiro, and Lanchantin placed 11th, dropping 4½ seconds from their original time. That night, the cubs celebrated their accomplishments by enjoying ice cream sundaes at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco.
This week, the cubs will begin competing in their league swim meets, starting with a meet against Flintridge Prep on Wednesday, March 18th. Good luck to the cubs with the rest of their season!
