Freshman gathered as a community to elect three new members for the student council last November. This marked the first time that the freshmen would decide who would represent them. Students gave speeches and listened to peers before deciding Riley Jue, Samia Halari, and Arabella Schlaerth were best fit for the student council.
Following being in the student council for a few months, the Mayfield Crier asked Arabella a few questions about life on the student council.
Q: How did you feel when you heard that you were going to be the freshman class president?
Arabella: I felt good because I worked hard on my speech, and I’m glad that people thought I was qualified. It was a bit overwhelming at the moment, because you realize you have this big responsibility, but you just have make sure to live up to it.
Q: How are meetings so far?
Arabella: We’ve had two of them so far. Our first one was after a break, so there weren’t many people there; but the second one we had more recently. There were more people there, and we talked about Christmas and everything.
Q: What are your goals as the student council president?
Arabella: I want to be as active as I can in student council and at the meetings when they need help with things. I also would like to be able to voice concerns, but I haven’t heard any yet.
Q: Overall, how has your student council experience been so far?
Arabella: It’s been good. I didn’t know how much went on behind the scenes and everything. It’s been nice to see how involved the students are in life at Mayfield.
Q: How has it been taking attendance for the freshman during our community gatherings?
Arabella: Honestly, it’s not that bad, because I already know everyone so it’s easier for me to do it because I recognize all the freshman’s faces.
Q: Do you have anything else to say, like about being a freshman in the student council?
Arabella: No, I don’t think so. I’ve been enjoying it and I like being able to represent a broader group.
