At Mayfield, our various affinity spaces give all students the chance to connect, share, and celebrate their identities in a supportive environment. The recent meeting of the Latiné Affinity Space was a reminder of how powerful it can be to find community with others who share similar backgrounds and experiences. Affinity spaces like this one provide students with a safe and welcoming environment to feel supported by the Mayfield community and to bond over shared identities. There is something so special about walking into a room with a group of amazing women that you know you already have something in common with and can relate to. There are four set times throughout the year for all the affinity spaces to meet, however more can be added as desired by the group. The meeting times are used by the Latiné affinity space to discuss serious topics like how recent ICE raids have personally affected members of our community, as well as for lighter, more joyful moments, such as planning the next fun game of lotería or to share traditional foods. These spaces create a safe environment where students can be open, find understanding, and feel more connected to Mayfield and each other. Students expressed how meaningful it was to find recognition and belonging within the group, emphasizing that no one is ever “too little this” or “too much that” to belong. With more meetings and activities planned, these affinity spaces continue to grow as places of unity, support, and joy.
