Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association who led strikes and boycotts in favor of farmworkers, came to Mayfield to speak for students and faculty. Students from St. Francis High School and Loyola High School. Huerta, co-founder of the National Farm Workers Association, answered questions about her life, some even coming from Mayfield Students.
One of the questions Huerta was asked was about how to eliminate racism as somebody who had been fighting against racism her whole life.
“We are all Africans of different shades and colors. Turn to the person next to you and say, ‘Hello, African relative!’” she said in response.
Huerta continued her speech by talking to Mayfield students about what life was like growing up in New Mexico and organizing people in protest for farmworkers. To end her speech, Huerta joined students in a call and response to commemorate our strength as a whole. Together, the Mayfield community chanted:
“Who’s got the power?”
“We’ve got the power!”
“People power!”
“Se puede?”
