The Society of Philippine Americans at Mayfield, affectionately known as the SPAM affinity group, immersed Mayfield families in the Filipino Christmas spirit through their adaptation of Simbang Gabi or ‘Night Mass.’ From crackling lechon and steaming pancit noodles to turon glistening with caramelized brown sugar, the event brought a taste of Filipino culture to all in attendance. The glittering parole lanterns and fashion show displaying traditional attire filled the Hayden Commons with animated, brightly colored scenes. Accompanied by Tagalog scripture readings and familiar songs, Father Leo Ortega’s homily prompted the congregation to reflect on the joy, camaraderie, and resilience that reside at the heart of this celebration.
