What is a Labubu? To some a toy and to others a demon. In 2015 an illustrator from Hong Kong by the name of Kasing Lung created a character called Labubu for his book THE MONSTERS. Then, in 2019 the Chinese toy company POP MART turned Lung’s character into a collectible toy sold in blind boxes. The small furry monster with a mischievous grin attached to a keychain became a global craze this year almost 5 years after its release. Why did the Labubu doll gain such sudden and vast popularity especially among adults? Information released by Texas A&M University reveals that the toy sales among adults have increased 12 percent this year. The overconsumption in our society today could be a reflection of the increasing economic pressure. Many adults buy toys for a sense of comfort and nostalgia. Toys such as dolls reconnect adults with happy memories from simpler times and in a world full of stress toys offer comfort and can reduce stress levels. Economic factors are a significant reason for the constant rise in adult stress levels especially in young adults. According to Forbes, the college tuition in America increased 180% from 1980 to 2020. The price for education is at an all time high and it continues to go up every year. Young adults are especially affected because they earn the lowest wages and carry the highest student debt. This economic stress harms the mental health of many young adults creating a serious issue in society. It makes sense why buying toys such as Labubus is becoming more common among adults because in this economy they are under pressure and crave comfort.
