In a time when climate change seems inexorable, Mayfield students came together to explore ways to practice sustainability.
On April 22nd, Mayfield Senior School celebrated Earth Day with an activity dedicated to teaching students how to decrease their carbon footprint. The activity was organized by Campus Ministry Coordinators Ella Bennet ‘25, Neci Dunn ‘25, and Lulu Stolpe ‘25. They were assisted by the heads of the environmental clubs and a couple AP Environmental Science students passionate about environmental sustainability.
The event featured five stations that each provided valuable information on ways to live more sustainably.
- Station 1: Reusable Materials – The Campus Ministry Coordinators taught students the importance of and types of reusable materials. The station even included a basket of reusable utensils for students to take home.
- Station 2: Composting – Sustainability Club head Amy Tanaka ‘25 taught students the importance of and how to compost. The station even featured Mayfield’s very own composting bin as a demo.
- Station 3: Renewable energy – AP Environmental Science Teacher Mrs. Agulian provided students with an example of renewable energy via a solar panel.
- Station 4: Carpooling – Kayla Abbruzzi ‘25 and Alaia Phillips ‘25 educated students about the environmental effects of gas-powered vehicles and how to reduce one’s carbon footprint by carpooling and taking public transportation.
- Station 5: Avoiding Fast Fashion – Eco-Club co-heads Ella Montanez ‘26 and Leah Whitfield ‘26 educated students about the unsustreainability of fast fashion and how to avoid it.
While climate change continues to worsen due to the indifference of many, Mayfield students are committed to being part of the solution by advocating and fighting for a greener Earth.
Happy Earth Day!
