For many Varsity swimmers, the highlight of their season is a trip to San Francisco. The Mayfield swim team travels 7 hours by van to the De La Salle Invitational Swim Meet. Just outside the city, the meet takes place in Walnut Creek. It is a two day invitational with prelims taking place on Friday and finals on Saturday.
Mayfield brought 12 swimmers to the meet. Each swimmer competed in 2 individual events and some athletes earned a spot on the relay teams. On Saturday, 3 seniors returned for finals in their respective individual events. Sophia Georgino ‘25 in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard backstroke; Kate Georgino ‘25 in the 100 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke; and Olivia Laguna ‘25 in the 500 yard freestyle. 3 relays also qualified for finals. “Every year we swim really well at this meet and it’s really exciting to support each other,” recalls Laguna.
Steve Bergen, head Swim and Dive Team coach, was especially proud of Sophia Georgino who “broke a 26-year old school record in the 100 Backstroke and placed 2nd overall”. Additionally, Bergen adds that “the Medley Relay of Sophia, Kate, Bella Villavicencio, and Zoe Chiu placed 7th in a CIF Consideration Time that is the 10th fastest time in school history”.
After the successes in the water, the team celebrated with a seafood dinner in the city at Capurros and walked to Ghirardelli Square for dessert. Now time for a long drive home!
