The varsity golf team is off to a promising start. With golf practice beginning in mid-August, it’s
no surprise that the team’s hard work has manifested itself in a one-and-two record. The Cubs collected their first win of the season and the first win since 2020 against Mayfield’s rivals, FSHA, while playing on their course in La Cañada. The match against FSHA revealed leadership on the team in sophomore Zoë Chiu who was awarded athlete of the week for her impressive low score of 47.
Led by head Coach Terry Cunningham and assistant coach Bill Lewis, this year’s varsity team is
composed of talent from all grades made up of five seniors, one junior, one sophomore, and two freshmen. The Junior Varsity roster presents a similar array of grade diversity with two freshmen, three sophomores, one junior, and three seniors. Interestingly, the Mayfield golf team has been many girls’ first introduction into the sport. Recognizing this, Coach Cunningham and Coach Lewis take advantage of their opportunity to not just develop golf skills but also teach golf in such a way that it is directly connected to life lessons and skills that extend beyond both the green and Mayfield’s gates and into the team member’s lives following high school.
“We are looking to improve the team’s golf skills and etiquette,” said Coach Lewis. He and Coach Cunningham feel that these golf skills can also be applied to “their education and careers after Mayfield,” said Lewis.
With all this in mind, we are so excited to watch the Cubs’ continuing success on the green!
