The Met: New York 

On May 1st, 2023 in the beautiful city of New York, many celebrities settled into their glam chairs bright and early in preparation for the annual Met Gala, an extravagant event that fundraises for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Every year, the Met Gala features a unique theme. This year, the theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”

The theme paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, a world renowned fashion designer, who has worked for fashion houses such as Balmain and Chloé. However, Lagerfield is best known as the mastermind behind the modern revival of Chanel, having joined as the brand’s creative chief in 1983 after the death of Coco Chanel. Although the theme spurred debate among many critics, some of whom view Lagerfeld as a controversial figure, the people in attendance of the Met decided to honor the fashion designer’s legacy by wearing legendary tributes to Lagerfeld.

As a fashion fanatic myself, the annual Met Gala is one of my favorite days of the year. It means I get to stalk a Met Gala instagram page that features the best outfits of the evening and watch too many celebrity interviews on YouTube. This year’s carpet highlighted outfits featuring shades of black and white, an abundance of pearls and roses, and delicate materials such as lace, feathers, and fur. 

Something that made this Met Gala particularly memorable was the outfits that were worn by the people in attendance. I’ve decided to share some of my favorites from the night and describe what I loved about them. Stay tuned for the end of this article to read about how the Met was brought to life for Mayfield’s prom in Pasadena.

1. Elle Fanning: Elle Fanning’s outfit may have been my favorite outfit worn at the Met Gala this year. I absolutely love the white Vivienne Westwood gown she wore that night and how she paired the delicacy of the Chantilly lace with the beautiful white daisies that she held and wore in her flower crown. The detail that immediately caught my attention was her daisy crown. The crown was adorned with black grosgrain ribbons which was honestly my favorite part of the outfit. The actress incorporated this hairpiece as a nod to one of her previous photo shoots for Lagerfeld where she donned a similar crown.
2. Jennie Kim: BLACKPINK’s Jennie Kim wore vintage Chanel from the ‘90s and let me just say, I loved it. The simplicity yet elegance of the outfit is what made it one of my favorites. I especially loved the silhouette of the dress itself and the feature of the iconic Chanel camellia flowers in both her hair and on the black belt. In my opinion, the black choker was such a wise choice because it added to the beauty of the dress’ neckline. 
3. Anne Hathaway: Anne Hathaway wore a tweed Versace gown with matching tweed opera gloves that really pulled the outfit together. I loved this outfit because I feel it highlights some of the most representative components of the night including pearls, flowers, and tweed fabric. I thought the gold safety pins were a really unique touch, especially since they were adorned with beautiful white pearls.
4. Dua Lipa: Lastly, I couldn’t go without mentioning Dua Lipa’s outfit at this year’s Met. Dua Lipa wore a Chanel Haute Couture F/W 92 wedding dress that was actually worn by Claudia Schiffer in the ‘90s. The dress was absolutely stunning, and I especially loved the white and silver trim and unique tasseled hem at the bottom of the dress. It was gorgeous!

The Met: Pasadena 

Similar to the extravagance and exciting rumbles found in New York on May 1st, Mayfield Senior School’s juniors and seniors danced the night away in Pasadena on Saturday, May 13th at this year’s prom titled, “The Met.” Unlike the Met Gala in New York, selfies and pictures were allowed inside the Pasadena prom venue, so I’d like to share some memorable moments and beautiful outfits that I captured during the event.
