Anonymous: “How do I feel better about my appearance?”
I completely understand how difficult it can be sometimes to feel good about yourself and your appearance, especially when we live in a world with social media constantly surrounding us. We all have those days when we look in the mirror and don’t feel good. It’s a normal feeling to be insecure about certain aspects of yourself. I’ve been there before, especially when so many photos of these “perfect” people surf the internet. But I promise you that feeling more secure and confident in your looks is possible.
Surround Yourself with Supportive People who Build You Up.
The people you surround yourself with can determine a lot of your thoughts and outlooks. If you are friends with people who constantly put you down and try never to compliment you, it will not make you feel good about yourself. It’s incredible how much of a difference it makes when you choose friends who support you and always build you up at any opportunity they can. They can remind you of your best qualities and make you feel better about your appearance.
Focus on the Parts of Yourself that you like Instead of the Parts you Dislike
Everyone has parts of themselves they wish they could change. Instead of constantly worrying about something about yourself that you don’t like, concentrate on what makes you feel confident. It makes it a lot easier to appreciate the way you appear. Take time out of your day to compliment yourself and be grateful for who you are and what you look like. Trust me, I’ve noticed confidence boosts after repeating daily affirmations in the mirror. I know this sounds silly, but it makes all the difference.
Avoid Comparing Yourself to Others on Social Media
I know it’s easier said than done. We spend hours scrolling through perfectly curated pictures of these people, and it’s hard not to feel like we’re missing out or somehow “less than.” But here’s the truth: social media is not real life. Those influencers? They’re using filters, photoshop, professional photographers, makeup artists, and even Photoshop to create a polished version of themselves. Everyone online posts when they look their best, not their bad days. You’re measuring your real life against a carefully constructed illusion by comparing yourself to that. Instead, remind yourself that no one’s perfect, and those images are often far from what is real. You are your unique person, and no one else has the same qualities, experiences, and individuality as you do. Focus on that, and try to limit the amount of time you spend on apps that make you feel less confident
Take Care of Yourself Physically
Feeling good about your appearance often starts with how you treat your body. This doesn’t mean obsessing over having a “perfect” figure but rather focusing on feeling healthy and strong. When you take care of yourself physically, you’re not just improving your appearance but boosting your mental health.
- Exercise regularly
- Eat nourishing food
- Get enough sleep
- Practice skincare
Feeling better about your appearance is a journey that everyone is on. I want to remind you that it’s not about fitting into someone else’s standards of beauty, but about embracing your own beauty and taking care of yourself. It’s okay to have insecurities, but don’t let them define how you view yourself. You are much more than just how you look. You’re talented, kind, thoughtful, and strong, making you beautiful. Everyone needs to stop comparing themselves, start caring for themselves, and work on turning those negative thoughts into self-love.
Remember you are not alone. Surrounding yourself with supportive people who love you is where you want to be. If you are in need of immediate attention please seek help.
